ABOUT THE BOOK: This book is a way to go home again -- home being a family farm, something now rapidly disappearing from the American scene. It offers a personal, passionate account of life on a family farm, presenting the real-life reflections of a woman who has lived it. Each vignette leaves the reader with a message. The author reminds us that we receive from agriculture not merely our food, but also many of the values and practices that have shaped America.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Lois Stark was born on a small farm in Wisconsin. For more than 40 years she filled the role of farm wife partner and mother, partaking of all phases of farm life, from birthing calves to giving the invocation at a state Holstein Convention. Lois and her husband developed their farm and dairy herd from "pauper" beginnings to one of the top producing Holstein herds in the state. After taking numerous classes by extension or correspondence, Lois began writing for publication. This book is one of the fruits of her labor.

ABOUT THE WISCONSIN ACADEMY: Since 1870, the nonprofit Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts, and Letters has connected people and ideas from all walks of life to celebrate thought and culture in our state and to explore how to jointly address our common problems. Programs include an art gallery for Wisconsin artists; a quarterly magazine about Wisconsin thought and culture (Wisconsin People & Ideas); regular free public forums and public policy initiatives like the current "Future of Farming and Rural Life" project that seeks a sustainable future for Wisconsin's rural communities.
