ABOUT THE BOOK

Within the past years, the number of alliances to combat major public health problems in the developing world has exploded. Yet, lack of comprehension of the management challenges they face has hampered alliances’ capacity to fully achieve their goals.

This study focused on the factors that influence the development, governance, operations, communication and reporting systems of a specific global health alliance. The case study was of the Global Alliance for Women’s Health (GAWH), a pseudonym.

Significant conclusions and lessons learned were:

• Donors have a responsibility to define their expectations to grantees and to assist with the formation, structure and management of an alliance.
• A mutually agreed upon detailed structure for governance, decision-making, and operations of an alliance is key to its ability to function and to adjust management overtime.
• Organizations that form alliances need to be active partners focused on creating and maintaining an enabling environment for collaboration and team learning.

The findings and lessons learned from this study will assist the international public health community, governments, the private sector and donors to develop the policies and management principles and practices that promote collaboration, assure sustainability and increase the likelihood of achieving critical goals.
