The Great Drug War
And Rational Proposals to Turn the Tide
by Arnold S. Trebach
UP Bookstore

ABOUT THE BOOK

"This controversial study is likely to be widely discussed."

-- Publishers Weekly, 1987

"...Trebach's proposals are worthy of serious consideration... Highly recommended."

-- Library Journal, 1987

Widely praised as a controversial but thoughtful alternative to drug control policies of its time, the first edition of The Great Drug War was released in 1987 by Macmillan Publishing.  Nearly 20 years later, it is clear that the drug interdiction policies of the 'eighties and 'nineties failed, and that Trebach's alternative proposals deserve a new look from today's perspective.

The 2005 edition can re-open a long-overdue dialogue between educators, policy makers and health professionals about the reasons why America still faces a drug crisis.  It includes a new introduction covering more recent developments in the use of medical marijuana, the relationship between drug trafficking and terrorism, and other fresh new material.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Author of The Heroin Solution (Yale University Press, 1982) and Legalize It? (University Press of America, 1993) Arnold S. Trebach has been an attorney, professor, award-winning writer, and a legendary drug policy pioneer for decades.  He founded the Drug Policy Foundation in 1986 and has been called the "Father of the Modern Drug Policy Reform Movement," the "Shadow Drug Czar," and much less favorable appellations by opponents.  Never fearful of critics, always controversial, in this new edition he continues to make the case for radical change in drug control policies, renewing an important book for a new generation of readers.
